What Exactly Does Matthew 6:33 Mean And How Can It Be The Cornerstone In Our Christain Walk

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:33

In Matthew 6:25-34, We see part of Jesus’s sermon on the mount, and in this section of the Bible, Jesus was teaching about the reason we need not worry. HE told the crowd that they should not worry about their life, what they will eat or drink, or their body and what they will wear. This teaching by Jesus is very foundational to the Christian life, and it shows that all our toiling and striving in life is very unnecessary.

In verse 32, Jesus tells the crowd that all the running around and striving in life, the pagans, unbelievers they do those things – In our society today, we see the same things, where people are relying on their strength to make wealth – working three jobs at a time just to survive. But, even with that, it is still not enough. Jesus was telling the crowd, and basically, He tells us that we need not worry about all these things we strive for; God already knows that we need them, and God will provide.

But in verse 33, Jesus made a profound statement that I think if the church talked more about, we would begin to see a dramatic shift in our world. Jesus said that “But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

To seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness is a simple but profound statement, but it eludes many people. It means that you seek God and devote yourself to living an upright life. It means to repent and turn away from your sin, which was the good news that Jesus brought to the world.

Matthew 3:2 “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

When you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, whom God had sent, you immediately become born-again, and The Holy Spirit comes and begins working in you. Your relationship with God will grow as you spend time reading the Bible and praying to God. God will speak back to you as you pray to Him and as you allow Him to lead you. When you surrender and submit every area of your life to God, that is when He steps in and begins providing for you and directing your steps towards His plan for your life.

When you truly surrender every part of your life to God, that is, your life, your finances, work, marriage, relationships, studies, friendships, etc., God will move on to those aspects of your life. And you will not have to worry about anything because you have faith in God that He will take care of your life.

Seeking the Kingdom of God means to go after God with all your heart, search the Bible for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding – praying continually to God, meditating on God’s word, and growing spiritually.

God’s righteousness means that because you have a relationship with God, you will not do anything that will be in disobedience to God because of your fear of God. You rever God, respect His commandments, and by The Holy Spirit dwelling in you; you do well to stay away from sin. We will all fall short from time to time, but God is gracious and will forgive the moment we repent – but do not intentionally sin because you know God’s grace is abundant. Ask God for strength and let Him lead you in all things.

The meaning to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness is that – you have to surrender all to God, allow God to move in your life, Let Him provide for you because you trust Him and know that He will give you the best. Repent of your sins and live an upright life.

We have to stop relying on our strengths and rely on God to take care of us – to guide and protect us.

Look at the life of a tree; it does not move, sow, or work – but God provides sunlight, rain, and people to prune it. Not to say that we have to be lazy and unfruitful and sit and let God send things to us – but for example, surrender your three jobs to God and let Him give you the best job that will make you stress-free, happy, and at the same time provide for you. Likewise, surrender your dying marriage to God, and let Him heal your marriage, so you and your spouse will fall in love again as you did during the early stages of your marriage. God wants the best for you and wants you to live a fulfilling life.
