How To Overcome Anxiety

Anxiety is the feeling of worry or nervousness about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

What Causes Anxiety?

  1. Anxiety can manifest itself as a defense mechanism from past emotional trauma
  2. Work or school stress.
  3. Change in living arrangements.
  4. New marriage
  5. Verbal abuse
  6. Physical abuse
  7. Finances

The wrong thing to tell someone with ongoing anxiety is to say to them to accept it and move on with life. Anxiety is a crippling mental condition that can significantly impact all areas of your life, and God does not desire for His children to live life with anxiety. The Bible says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

Emotional Wounds Are More Difficult To Heal Than Physical Wounds

In almost 95% of the population, their anxiety stems from past trauma during childhood or adulthood. Also, emotional trauma causes emotional wounds that may manifest as anxiety or other defense mechanisms. Unfortunately, emotional wounds are more difficult to heal than physical wounds.

Anxiety is almost always accompanied by fear. In addition, fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or a threat. In conclusion, If you have a constant fear, you may find it difficult to accomplish simple daily tasks.

Symptoms Of Anxiety

Disassociation from close relationships

Panic attacks

Worrying a lot

Constant stress

Fatigue

Withdrawing from interpersonal relationships

Unwanted intrusive thoughts

Did you know that long-term anxiety may lead to depression?

How To Overcome Anxiety

  1. Recognize there is anxiety that may be caused by past emotional trauma.
  2. Think back to what may have caused the emotional trauma.
  3. Forgive those who caused the trauma or forgive the situation that caused you the trauma—also, forgiveness releases all associated pain, anger, resentment, and bitterness. When you forgive, it creates space in your heart for the healing process to begin, including overcoming your anxiety. The Bible says, Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (Ephesians 4:31-32 NIV)
  4. Know that you are now in control of all your future situations. Also, recognize that we live in a broken world, and there will be people we will meet who will be mean and may treat us unpleasantly, but you have the power to block out that negativity.
  5. Create boundaries.
  6. Pray daily Bible verses that speak to the situation of anxiety. Additionally, these Bible verses are powerful in delivering you from anxiety and fear. Philippians 4:6, Proverbs 4:23, Philippians 4:8.
  7. Write out everything that has caused your anxiety – every person or every situation and pray and ask God to heal you from the trauma you have experienced. Also, incorporate fasting into your prayers.
  8. If the anxiety has caused you to avoid doing certain things you enjoyed doing, try to add those activities into your daily routine and ease into those activities.
  9. Renew your mindset and recognize that you are not that same person anymore.
  10. Submit and surrender every area of your life to God through Jesus Christ and experience greater joy and peace in your life.

You can overcome anxiety, but it may take some time to heal from the emotional wounds that the trauma has caused. But, with daily prayers and with a mindset change, your healing is inevitable.
