Noah’s Assignment And God’s Purpose For Mankind
Noah’s Assignment
We started this series by talking about the patriarchs and how God used Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to create His Jewish nation. Today, we will talk about Noah and how God used him to preserve a select few; Noah’s family and two of each animal in the world. Because of man’s wickedness in that generation, God would start over again with humankind, but He needed a few select people to procreate and fill the earth after the flood, and He chose the family of Noah. Noah had three sons. All the people who will enter the ark will be Noah and his wife, his three sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth), and their wives.
(Genesis 6:9 NIV) This is the account of Noah and his family.
Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
Beginning in Genesis 6, God observed the wickedness of mankind on the earth and how the heart of man was evil all the time. So, God decided to wipe from the face of the earth the human race, including the animals.
(Genesis 6:6-8 NIV) The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord; he was the only man who was calling on the name of the Lord. Whenever he talks to others about God, they will laugh at him and mock him. God regretted creating humans.
God gave Noah instructions –
(Genesis 6:18-22 NIV) 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”
22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
Noah was obedient to the words of God, and in Chapter 7 of Genesis, we read that God told Noah to go into the ark, he and his family, for God had found him righteous in his generation. So Noah and his family entered the ark plus two of every species of animal.
After they entered the ark, God shut them in. Then, for forty days, the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased, they lifted the ark on the water. Every living thing that breathed air that did not enter the ark died. Only Noah and his family and the select animals were left. The water flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days. After some time, the water dried up, and God told Noah to come out of the ark.
(Genesis 8:15-17 NIV) 15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 17 Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you—the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground—so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.”
God’s purpose has been accomplished through Noah and his family. The flood wiped away evil people and animals – but Noah and his family and select animals will multiply and increase in number on the earth and start new generations.
In Genesis Chapter 9, we read about the covenant that God made with Noah –
(Genesis 9:8-17 NIV) 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
In this account from the bible, God called Noah; he was obedient to the call of God. God gave him specific instructions, and Noah obeyed it all to a T. Through Noah’s obedience, you and I are in this world through ancestors that came from back to Noah. This is why doing God’s will is very important, because God will work through you to accomplish His purpose. Whenever God uses a person for a particular work, that work serves immediate or future generations.
If you feel that God has called you to work for Him, obey the call; and I have a post on the process that you may have to go through to get you ready. In addition, you can read the steps to take when preparing for your calling.
